Postdoctoral position in Regional Earth System Modeling at UCLA
The UCLA Dept of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences seeks a postdoctoral scholar in Regional Earth System Modeling. With the establishment at UCLA of the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (http://www.jifresse.ucla.edu/), regional earth system science is a burgeoning area within the department, the university, and at the nearby NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The postdoctoral scholar will oversee the continued development and application of the Institute’s regional earth system model, consisting of atmospheric (WRF) and oceanic (ROMS)
components. Development activities will concentrate mainly on improvement of the atmospheric boundary layer and cloud parameterization, while applications include analyses of coastal air-sea interaction and mechanisms of climate variability and change at landscape and ecosystem scales. The position will also involve collaboration with other faculty and researchers within the Institute on applications of the regional model. Initially for one year and renewable on an annual basis, the position will be jointly supervised by Professors Alex Hall and James McWilliams. It is available immediately, though starting date is negotiable.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences or a related field, effective oral and written communication skills, and an interest in collaborative research. Strong programming skills are also essential. Experience running regional or global numerical models will be an advantage, especially WRF or ROMS. Applicants should submit a brief statement of research interests and goals, and a complete CV, including contact information for three references, to Prof. Alex Hall. The postal address is
