The Ocean Modeling Group within the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for graduate studies (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Marine Science (usm.edu/ocean). Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on the development and application of a coupled ocean modeling system to the coastal waters of northern Gulf of Mexico in order to improve understanding of coastal hydrodynamics, estuarine circulation and exchange processes, wind-wave-current interactions, freshwater influence and sediment transport. This modeling system is used in projects that address questions relating to coastal restoration, living marine resources, fisheries sustainability, habitat suitability and climate change. Our model-based studies rely on datasets and coastal environment characterization obtained from observational systems such as autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, towed ocean vehicles, buoys, moorings, satellites and land-based remote sensing technologies. Opportunities to work with such oceanographic data sets to examine the noted scientific questions as part of contributing toward development of Gulf of Mexico climatological data archives curated by NOAA-NCEI are also available. Successful candidates will have a chance to work with faculty and researchers with expertise in oceanography, ocean engineering, hydrographic science, atmospheric science and marine optics at USM, NOAA and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
We seek dedicated and motivated students holding a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in engineering, oceanography, marine science, hydrographic science, computer science or a related physical science field. Application review will start immediately, and successful applicants may start as early as Spring 2021. All DMS graduate assistants are supported with an annual resource package, including a tuition waiver and a stipend with benefits.
Applications may be submitted via the web at: http://usm.edu/graduate-programs/marine-science.php
