Post-doctoral Position in Coastal Ocean Modeling – University of Southern Mississippi
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Marine Science (http://www.usm.edu/marine) seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar in the field of coastal ocean numerical modeling. The successful candidate will join a large, multidisciplinary team of senior and early-career scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and staff in the Consortium for Coastal River-Dominated Ecosystems (CONCORDE) that is studying how the complex 4-D physical, chemical and particulate fields of the Mississippi Coast’s pulsed river system influences the spatio-temporal variation and distribution of planktonic organisms in the Mississippi Bight.
The successful candidate will work with CONCORDE’s synthetic model team to investigate biophysical interactions, transport mechanisms and material exchange processes that impact the marine ecosystem of the Mississippi Bight through application of a ROMS-based physical-biogeochemical model. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in oceanography or related field, a strong interest in pursuing interdisciplinary marine research, the ability to work well independently as part of the project team, and strong verbal and written communication skills. Preferred candidates will have experience with interdisciplinary ocean modeling and the application of coupled model systems (i.e., sediment transport, biogeochemical and/or ecosystem components) integrated with circulation models.
As part of assembling relevant data sets for the synthetic model’s application and validation, the candidate will work closely with CONCORDE’s PIs, graduate students and support staff. CONCORDE (http://www.con-corde.org) is a consortium funded under the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GOMRI; http://www.gulfresearchinitiative.org) consisting of 16 researchers from The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Mississippi State University, Naval Research Laboratory, Old Dominion University, Oregon State University, Rutgers University, and the University of South Alabama. Post-doctoral researchers and students will be mentored according to the CONCORDE mentoring plan, and all are expected to participate in annual conferences and consortium team discussions.
The position will be at USM’s Department of Marine Science located at Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, MS, the single-largest concentration of oceanographers in the world. The successful candidate will be required to pass a NASA background security check to work at Stennis, and a USM employment background check. The appointment is planned for two years, and will be reviewed annually and renewed based upon performance and funding. Salary is very competitive, and benefits include health insurance and retirement options.
To submit an application, please send: 1) a cover letter detailing qualifications; 2) a one-page statement of research interests; 3) a current curriculum vitae and; 4) names and contact information for three references to: Dr. Jerry Wiggert, USM Department of Marine Science, 1020 Balch Blvd., Stennis Space Center, MS, 39529; or send electronically to jerry.wiggert@usm.edu. Review of applicants begins immediately, and the position will remain open until filled.
