2 ROMS PhD projects – at UNSW Sydney Australia

#1 Unread post by moninya »

The University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia is seeking students for two 3-year PhD projects starting in Aug 2014. International Scholarships are available, but must be applied for online by 28 February 2014 EST. http://research.unsw.edu.au/internation ... holarships

Please send expressions of interest to Moninya Roughan (mroughan@unsw.edu.au).

These projects require a student with a research BSc (Hons) or research Masters degree preferably in physics, mathematics, oceanography or quantitative Marine Science. Other desirable characteristics include oceanographic numerical modelling experience and knowledge of ocean dynamics. English language proficiency is essential.

1. Advancing Dynamical Understanding in the East Australian Current: Optimising the Ocean Observing and Prediction Effort. Dr M. Roughan, (UNSW) Dr B Powell (U Hawaii) Dr P. Oke (CSIRO)
The objective of this research is to provide new insight into the complex dynamics of the East Australian Current through data assimilative numerical modelling. We will assess the value of new oceanic observations mainly acquired through the Australian IMOS program in improving state-estimation and thus prediction, along Australia’s highly populated east coast.

2. Changes to coastal connectivity in a hotspot of ocean warming Dr M. Roughan, Dr E Van Sebille and Dr P Cetina Heredia,
The primary goal of this project is to use results from oceanographic modelling to elucidate implications of future changes to coastal connectivity for marine organisms. This project will involve the use of ROMS to hindcast the circulation in the East Australian Current and to undertake simple particle trajectory experiments to understand coastal connectivity. This position will also involve linking ecological and biological knowledge with oceanographic modelling providing scientific context to management and conservation strategies to allow early and informed adaptive responses to climate change in the ocean.
Scholarships

Domestic Students (Australian Residents) are expected to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award (due by 23 May 2014 EST).
International Students are expected to apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (due 28 Feb 2014 EST) to begin work in July 2014. In addition a top-up scholarship will be provided for the successful candidates of up to $7,000 AUD per annum.
