There are many Research Opportunities available, and we would like to bring your attention to opportunity #45

where we are seeking an applicant to investigate impacts of storms on coastal systems using components of a coupled modeling system, preferably COAWST, that combines ROMS+SWAN+WRF+Sediment. The incumbent would investigate storm dynamics, use the model results to understand the significant physical processes occurring during the events, and compare the coastal response to observational data. We would prefer the candidate to investigate dynamics during Hurricane Irene (2011) and/or Superstorm Sandy (2012) and the impacts to the northeast region, as we are currently studying that area with special interest along Fire Island (southern Long Island) as part of the USGS Coastal Processes Project. Areas of specific interest include:
- simulating wave-current interactions during extreme events
- investigate nearshore or inner-shelf sediment morphological changes during hurricanes
- investigate atmosphere-ocean-wave interactions
- compare response of Hurricane Irene vs. Superstorm Sandy (erosion vs. accretion on Fire Island)
Candidates can propose to investigate other storms/locations/processes as long as the research will lead to broader understanding of storm processes applicable to other geographic locations. Candidates must apply by September 20, 2013, through USA jobs (see web site), and are expected to communicate with the research advisors on their applications. Please contact us if you have an interest.
