The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a postdoctoral research assistant to work with the Ice-Covered Ocean Response to Atmospheric Storms (ICORTAS) project. Scientific goals are to investigate 1) the high-frequency, near-inertial response of the coupled ice-ocean system to strong atmospheric forcing and 2) the shoaling and dissipation of near-inertial wave groups as they reach the continental shelf break.
The successful candidate will conduct numerical modeling of relevant ice-ocean dynamics, guided by the ICORTAS field data, which includes measurements of upper ocean sea-ice drift and deformation, current structure, and remote sensing products. The Arctic Region Supercomputer Center (ARSC) jointly funds the position, and candidates will be expected to utilize their High Performance Computing facilities.
UAF is Alaska’s research university. Campus facilities provide state-of-the-art instrumentation in support of research (e.g., Alaska Region Supercomputing Center, www.arsc.edu; Alaska Satellite Facility, www.asf.alaska.edu). SFOS has over 60 faculty at various locations across Alaska and over 125 graduate students engaged in thesis research in Alaska waters and throughout the world (www.sfos.uaf.edu).
Qualified applicants must possess a Ph.D. in physical oceanography or related field from an accredited university by the time of hire, and have a strong research and publication record appropriate to their experience and date of degree. Additional information about the position can be found on the SFOS website at www.sfos.uaf.edu/employment.
