Research Associate (Postdoctoral), College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University. The successful applicant will lead research in areas of development and implementation of algorithms for variational data assimilation in a nonlinear model of circulation over the ocean shelf and in the adjacent interior ocean (an eddy-dominated coastal transition zone). Data assimilation will be utilized as a tool that combines a dynamical model and available ocean observations in a mathematically rigorous way, to provide an improved estimate of the ocean state, information about model errors, and new understanding of the co-variability of ocean processes. The research will involve application to the environmental sciences of advanced numerical methods for partial differential equations, nonlinear optimization, adjoint-based techniques, and numerical linear algebra. Requires a Ph.D. or equivalent in applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, oceanography, atmospheric sciences or related field; demonstrated motivation for research; experience in scientific modeling using FORTRAN (preferably w/ experience in Matlab, Unix, and parallel computing); a good command of English; and ability to work as part of a team.
