Scientist Position in Ocean Modeling (TvL 13) Physical Oceanography (Theory)

Applications are invited for a full-time permanent research position (TvL 13) as
Ocean Modeler (Physics)
to work on all aspects of ocean modeling, including (but not limited to) the application and further development of high-resolution hydrodynamic coastal ocean models. As these models contain sub-modules of wave action, sediment- and suspended particle dynamics, data assimilation and biogeochemistry the successful applicant must clearly demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts involved.
Applicants must have a PhD in Physics or Physical Oceanography with a minimum of five years experience working with numerical models of the ocean and must have strong physical, mathematical and computational skills. Computational skills shall include excellent knowledge of F90/95, C, Matlab, UNIX and a working knowledge of basic parallelization software environments. Applicants are also required to have experience in three-dimensional unstructured grid modeling with finite-element or finite-volume models (e.g. FEOM, FVCOM, SUNTANS, UnTRIM) and unstructured mesh generation.
The successful applicant will work as part of a research team in the Physical Oceanography (Theory) group led by Prof. Jörg-Olaf Wolff and be in part responsible for research activities including application of the existing modeling systems (FVCOM-SWAVE, GETM, ROMS, etc.) to the East Frisian Wadden Sea (Southern North Sea) and other national or international coastal areas, algorithm design, validation of model results and presentation of scientific methods and results in publications and on international conferences. Besides having the skills of an excellent physical ocean modeler it is very much desired for the applicant to have already demonstrated practical knowledge of and involvement in interdisciplinary research tasks (e.g. groundwater modeling including biogeochemical tracers, ecological modeling concepts, etc.).
The successful applicant is also required to take a proactive role in acquiring third-party funding for the group’s ocean modeling activities and interdisciplinary applications in cooperation with various groups at ICBM that need ocean modeling support. As these funding agencies are either national bodies (BMBF, DFG, MWK, HLRN) or international bodies (EU, NSF, ARC) an excellent command of the German as well as of the English language is mandatory. The same language demands hold for the successful data acquisition from various national and international data centers (for forcing or validation of model results). Further duties include the co-supervision of BSc/MSc/PhD-students and contributions to the lecturing of undergraduate and graduate students.
