POSITION OF ASSISTANT ANALYST/PROGRAMMER, NATO GRADE B5, THAT IS AVAILABLE IN
THE IN THE MILITARY OCEANOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT (MILOC).
THE MILITARY OCEANOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT UNDERTAKES THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL
INVESTIGATIONS INTO RAPID ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND THE RECOGNIZED
ENVIRONMENTAL PICTURE IN SUPPORT OF NATO EXPEDITIONARY OPERATIONS. THIS IS
ONE OF THE MAIN THRUSTS OF THE NATO UNDERSEA RESEARCH CENTRE (NURC) PROGRAM
OF WORK. THE MILOC DEPARTMENT HAS ONGOING PROGRAMS IN OCEAN PREDICTION TOOLS,
GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION PROCESSING, IN-SITU AND REMOTE SENSING OF THE
LITTORAL, AND UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS. THE ABILITY AND SKILLS TO CONDUCT
EXPERIMENTAL WORK AT SEA AND REMOTE SENSING OF ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS OF
LITTORAL AREAS IS A PRIMARY CAPABILITY.
1. DUTIES
THE DUTIES OF THE ASSISTANT ANALYST/PROGRAMMER WILL BE TO PROVIDE SCIENTIFIC
PROGRAMMING AND EXPERIMENTATION PLANNING AND ANALYSIS IN SUPPORT OF PROJECT
SCIENTISTS AND OTHER ONGOING EFFORTS IN THE MILITARY OCEANOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT.
A. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMING
- CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT, TESTING AND OPERATION OF 2D & 3D OCEANIC
AND METEOROLOGICAL NUMERICAL MODELS.
- DEVELOP AND APPLY METHODS FOR THE VISUALIZATION OF MODEL DERIVED 4D+ DATA
SETS.
B. FIELD SUPPORT
- PERFORM BASIC DATA TRANSLATION AND DATA ANALYSIS/ REDUCTION AS REQUESTED
BY SUPERVISING SCIENTISTS.
- ARCHIVE DATA AND CONVERT DATA IN DIFFERENT STANDARD DATA FORMATS SUCH AS
NETCDF AND GRIB.
- CONDUCT DATA PROCESSING OF GEOPHYSICAL AND HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYS WITH
SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON MULTIBEAM SURVEYS IN SHALLOW WATERS AND THE
PRODUCTION OF BOTTOM BATHYMETRY MAPS.
- ASSIST IN EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS INCLUDING PREPARATION FOR EXPERIMENTS,
COLLECTION OF SCIENTIFIC DATA AND SUPPORTING INFORMATION DURING
EXPERIMENTS AND IN PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA.
C. GENERAL DUTIES
- DOCUMENT WORK PERFORMED AND ASSIST IN THE PREPARATION OF REPORTS AND
NOTES
- MAY BE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE ABOVE DUTIES AT SEA, ON ANY OF THE CENTRE
SHIPS OR OTHER SHIPS OR PLATFORMS THAT MAY BE INVOLVED.
2. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
A. PROFESSIONAL:
EXPERIENCE IN DEVELOPMENT OF GEOPHYSICAL NUMERICAL SIMULATION MODELS OR
SIMILAR ACTIVITIES USING FORTRAN/C CODE.
HIGH FAMILIARITY WITH UNIX/LINUX OPERATING SYSTEMS.
EXPERIENCE IN MATLAB (OR SIMILAR) PROGRAMMING AND DATA PROCESSING.
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF GEOPHYSICAL/OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS.
FIELD TRIAL EXPERIENCE
B. EDUCATION/TRAINING:
A TECHNICAL DEGREE FROM A RECOGNIZED UNIVERSITY IN OCEANOGRAPHY, GEOPHYSICS,
ENGINEERING OR APPLIED MATHEMATICS OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE IN A ESSIONAL
PROFENVIRONMENT.
C. LANGUAGE:
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH IS REQUIRED
3. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
A. PROFESSIONAL:
EXPERIENCE WITH DATA VISUALIZATION SCHEMES FOR HIGH DIMENSION DATA SETS.
EXPERIENCE WITH OTHER HIGHER LEVEL LANGUAGES SUCH AS C++, PYTHON AND JAVA.
EXPERIENCE IN PERFORMING AND PROCESSING MULTIBEAM SURVEYS.
EXPERIENCE IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT FOR CREATING NUMERICAL SIMULATION CODES IN
PARALLEL PROCESSING ENVIRONMENT.
EXPERIENCE WITH DATA ARCHIVAL IN NETCDF/GRIB FORMATS.
B. EDUCATION/TRAINING:
RELEVANT POST-GRADUATE/MASTER QUALIFICATIONS IN TECHNICAL SUBJECTS.
4. SECURITY CLEARANCE:
ANY CONTRACT OFFERED WILL BE SUBJECT TO THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE OBTAINING
NATO SECRET CLEARANCE. PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT, THE NATO BODY MUST HAVE
RECEIVED A SECURITY CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF THE COUNTRY
OF WHICH THE CANDIDATE IS A NATIONAL.
5. PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

6. CONTRACT
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL BE OFFERED A DEFINITE DURATION CONTRACT NOT
