Two Ph.D Positions at University of Maryland

#1 Unread post by mingli »

We invite applications from talented and motivated students interested in pursuing a Ph.D degree in coastal oceanography, turbulent mixing processes and biological-physical interactions. The successful applicants are expected to participate in two new projects funded by National Science Foundation. Applicants should have a M.Sc or B.Sc degree in oceanography, applied mathematics or physics, preferably with experience in numerical ocean modeling. The prospective students must be admitted to the University of Maryland Marine-Estuarine-Environmental Sciences (MEES) graduate program and will conduct research at the UMCES (University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science) Horn Point Laboratory under the direction of Prof. Ming Li. Two positions are available:

(1) Biological-physical interactions in the coastal ocean. This student will develop numerical models to investigate how climate variability and extreme weather events affect plankton productivity in two Mid-Atlantic estuaries.

(2) Turbulent mixing processes. This student will participate in a joint observational-modeling program to investigate turbulent mixing processes and circulation dynamics in the coastal ocean.

The PhD positions are expected to start in summer or fall of 2009 and include stipend, tuition, medical insurance and travel to domestic and international conferences. If you are interested in one of the two positions, please send Dr. Ming Li (mingli@hpl.umces.edu) an e-mail with “PhD position” in the subject line. Review of applications will begin on December 15. The deadline for applications to the MEES graduate program is February 1, 2009.
