UNVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ
DEPARTMENT OF OCEAN SCIENCES
POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR
The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to develop and explore numerical models of the California Current System (CCS) focused on marine microbial communities. Through the exploration of forward and data assimilative physical and biological models, we will investigate the relative influence of physical and biological processes that drive biodiversity, control bio-geographic boundaries, and participate in larger ecosystem function within the region. The project will use the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and a novel ecosystem model that allows the self-organization of diverse biological communities. The successful candidate will join a research team at UCSC that includes related modeling, field and laboratory activities.
RANK: Postdoctoral Scholar (1 – 2 positions available)
SALARY: $43,500 - $48,372 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent in physical or biological oceanography or related field; ability to work well independently and as part of a team; and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in physical or biological ocean modeling with strong computational skills or with a background in biological oceanography and marine microbes; interest in dynamical processes within the CCS; motivated to drive new developments in data assimilative or ecosystem modeling; eager to participate in multi-disciplinary problems.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year, with possibility of extension contingent on availability of funding and positive performance review.
POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible following initial screening date.
TO APPLY: Electronic submissions are preferred. Applicants should send: 1) Curriculum Vitae, 2) a one-page statement of your research interests, and 3) contact information for three references* to cedwards@ucsc.edu.
