A PhD position is available at Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany as part of its Earth System Sciences Research School (ESSRES).
The project will implement a high-resolution version of the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS) for the Drake Passage and Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean to study the dynamics of the circulation and quantify the fluxes of macro- and micro-nutrients in the water column and from the sediments. The effects of eddies and jets on marine biota and productivity will be investigated with a coupled biogeochemical model. Geological, remote sensing and climate data will be used for model setup and validation.
ESSRES provides its students with
• a structured research training and supervision within the PhD programme
• a clearly focussed education and research plan through regularly meetings of the PhD committee
• a broad range of ‘transferable skill’ courses
and prepares them for successful careers in academia and industry.
Applicants are sought to have a BSc or MSc in oceanography, physics, engineering, computing science or a related field, preferably with some programming skills.
Applications including a cover letter, CV, copies of degree certificates and transcripts, and names and contact information of at least two referees should be emailed to:
