Ocean Software Developer for a permanent full-time position at NOW Systems (Madrid, Santiago de Compostela or Zaragoza, Spain)

NOW Systems is looking for new talent. We are looking for an ocean software developer to be part of our Product Quality Team. We offer a permanent full-time position, and the selected candidate will contribute to the assessment of ocean products, validating ocean models in the context of Copernicus Marine and coastal services, and collaborating with different R&D projects.
About NOW Systems:
The SME Nologin Oceanic Weather Systems -NOW Systems- is the environmental branch of Nologin Consulting, a Spanish technological company established in the year 2000 that actively works with companies around the world, helping them on the digital transformation with a complete value proposition, including development and deployment of innovative structural solutions.
Since 2022, NOW Systems has been specialized in delivering science based operational services for an enhanced knowledge of the past, present, and future state of the blue and green ocean. As an ocean service provider, NOW Systems helps to implement technical solutions that support more efficient and sustained activities (and decision-making) for the Blue Economy.
NOW Systems is a Copernicus Marine Service provider, co-leading (with Mercator Océan International) the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland Monitoring and Forecasting Centre (IBI-MFC). In this IBI-MFC context, NOW Systems is responsible for delivering operational products and services, based on ocean circulation, waves, and biogeochemistry model applications, as well as for assessing the IBI-MFC Product Quality. Furthermore, NOW Systems is the developer of the Copernicus Marine Product Quality Dashboard Application, contributing also to other Copernicus Marine Centers (such as the INS-TAC, OC-TAC and the new COLAB-MFC). Likewise,
NOW Systems also delivers coastal services, integrating information from several data sources, including near-real-time monitoring and high-resolution forecasting systems, and allowing operational early warning systems.

About the job:
The candidate will work as an ocean software developer in the NOW Systems Product Quality Team, and his/her activity will be primary focused on product quality activities developed within the Copernicus Marine IBI-MFC and COLAB-MFC services.
The Ocean Software Developer is responsible for designing, implementing and deploying software tools to be used for the numerical validation of operational ocean products and for contributing to the development of dashboards for service-oriented solutions. The candidate has the capability to work and collaborate in a multi-disciplinary environment for the development of operational oceanographic applications related to the evaluation of forecasting systems skills.

Key responsibilities are:
• Process and analysis of ocean data (in NetCDF, GRIB and ZARR formats).
• Work on large-scale-ocean datasets as provided, for instance, by the Copernicus Marine Service (e.g., model-based products and observations from in-situ and satellite).
• Design and program model validation metrics, applying different statistical methodologies.
• Document codes and numerical methodologies.
• Perform visualization of model validation results (using for instance Matplotlib or similar libraries and/or GIS Tools).
• Implement data pipelines for service-based solutions.
• Provide technical support to the operational validation of ocean data.
• Technical reporting and potential contribution to valorize scientific results, helping to disseminate results through scientific forums and publications.

Qualifications, experience, and assets to have:
The ideal candidate has the following Skills & Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Geoinformatics or relevant degree in ocean related fields (physics/oceanography/meteorology or other closely related discipline such as environmental, and coastal engineering).
- Strong proficiency in programming and scripting with Python and Shell scripting.
- Strong proficiency in using numerical libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, xarray, Scikit-Learn.
- Managing Python environments with Conda, Poetry or similar.
- Familiarity with statistical techniques for geospatial and oceanographic datasets.
- Familiarity with parallel computing for large-scale data analysis (Dask).
- Understanding of DevOps, version control (Git, Github), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) for geospatial applications.
- Knowledge of ocean data formats (NetCDF, GRIB, ZARR) and GIS data formats (shapefile, geojson).
- Knowledge of database use (relational: PostgreSQL/PostGIS, MySQL) for oceanographic datasets.
- Fluent in English. His/her fluency in Spanish is also valued.
- He/she is a rigorous, creative team worker wishing to contribute to an ambitious international framework for the pan-European operational oceanographic Copernicus Marine service.

Additional experience that will be positively evaluated:
-Use/development of operational oceanography tools and systems.
-Use of high-performance computing and GPU computing.

Job Conditions and Location.
He/she will have the opportunity to work in a highly multidisciplinary environment, in close collaboration not only with NOW System’s staff, but with other sci/tech experts from the Copernicus Marine and other coastal services, as well as with researchers from other R&D projects.
The selected candidate will work in a smart-working environment, having good flexibility for schedule and remote work conditions. Connection with one of the NOW System’s premises (in Madrid, Santiago de Compostela or Zaragoza) is required, so it is needed that the candidate will be based close to one of these locations.
The successful candidate will be recruited by NOW Systems, following its recruitment principles. Remuneration commensurate with Candidate’s qualifications and experience.
