Postdoctoral Position in HAB and Climate Modeling at UC Santa Cruz

#1 Unread post by jfiechter »

DESCRIPTION
As part of the University’s coastal climate resilience initiative, the Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for a position of Postdoctoral Scholar to investigate the predictability of historical and future patterns of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) presence and toxicity along the coast of California. Specific research tasks include: (1) augmenting an existing HAB model with biogeochemical constraints, (2) applying the HAB model to downscaled climate projections, and (3) exploring the feasibility of seasonal HAB forecasts. The postdoctoral scholar will work under the direct supervision of Prof. Jerome Fiechter and collaborate closely with other faculty members in the Ocean Sciences and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Departments, as well as researchers from the Environmental Research Division at NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Monterey.
Desired skills include experience with statistical models (GLMs, GAMs) and ability to work with and analyze large model datasets (NetCDF format). Working knowledge of programming languages and Linux environment is a plus. Since the postdoctoral scholar will be expected to both lead independent research and work as a team member, willingness for collaboration and demonstrated ability to summarize scientific findings in the form of written manuscripts and oral presentations are also important.
