Offshore Renewable Energy Postdoc; Application Link

#1 Unread post by ryankwalter »

Please find attached a revised announcement and below an application link for a postdoctoral opportunity in offshore renewable energy at Cal Poly.

https://www.calpolycorporationjobs.org/postings/955

We will begin reviewing applications on November 1st. See below for description.

The Center for Coastal Marine Sciences at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is seeking a postdoctoral associate to lead a data analysis and synthesis project to assess the potential for offshore renewable energy along the California central coast. This federally-funded project is highly applied and interdisciplinary, and includes research in physical oceanography, atmospheric dynamics, geography, and geospatial statistics, and to a lesser extent ecology, economics, and social science. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and data management skills and a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, atmospheric science, geography, marine science, engineering, ecological modeling, or a related field.

Specific research tasks will include: (1) managing and analyzing wind data from oceanographic buoys and satellite measurements across the California central coast region; (2) synthesizing wind data to generate spatial and temporal estimates of wind fields; and (3) developing models to estimate offshore wind power generation potential using turbine specifications. Further analyses may include additional socioeconomic and ecological factors, as well as other related topics of interest to the candidate.

The postdoctoral associate will lead several peer-reviewed publications and present results at scientific meetings. Results from this project will inform public policy on renewable energy development and allow the post doc to interact with government officials and agencies at local, state, and federal levels. There also may be opportunities to mentor students and teach classes.

Preferred start date is early 2017, but may be negotiable. The appointment is fully funded for up to two years, with the possibility of additional years contingent on performance. The postdoc will report to Drs. Ryan Walter (Physics), Crow White (Biology), and Benjamin Ruttenberg (Biology), with input from other project PIs, including Dr. Dean Wendt (Director, Center for Coastal Marine Sciences), Hon. Sam Blakeslee (Director, Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policy), and Dr. Steve Hamilton (Economics). Salary is commensurate with experience but will be competitive. Full benefits are included. Note: applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S. at the time of hiring (e.g. U.S. citizen or permanent resident status, or hold an appropriate work visa).

The position is open until filled but initial review will begin Nov 1.
Applications should include a CV and brief cover letter highlighting relevant skills and experience.

Contact Benjamin Ruttenberg (bruttenb@calpoly.edu) with any additional questions.
