Glavish-Buckley Position in Theoretical Climate Physics

The Department of Physics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, seeks applicants for a newly created academic position in Theoretical Climate Physics. The appointment can be made at any level between Lecturer and Associate Professor.*

This permanent appointment will expand the Department’s programme in climate physics and geophysics, which includes the existing Buckley-Glavish Chair in Climate Physics, held by Prof Roger Davies [cloud remote sensing and related climate modeling].

We are seeking applicants whose research can lead to a better understanding of the global climate system. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: climate modeling; interactions between the cryosphere, ocean and atmosphere; deep-ocean circulation, theoretical studies of past climates and related planetary climate systems; large scale fluid dynamics and stochastic processes.

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field, a passion for inspirational teaching and mentoring, and the potential to establish a world-class research programme. The Department of Physics is the largest in New Zealand and the University maintains significant computational facilities. The University of Auckland (~38,500 students) is New Zealand’s leading university and is located in the heart of Auckland, frequently rated as one of the world’s most livable cities.

Review of applications will begin January 30th, 2013 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants should provide a CV, statement of research interests, and the names of at least three referees.

Enquiries can be made to Richard Easther, Professor and Head of Department, (r.easther@auckland.ac.nz), or Roger Davies, Buckley-Glavish Professor of Climate Physics, (r.davies@auckland.ac.nz).

Review of applications begins January 30, 2013 continues until the position is filled.

Apply via academicjobsonline.org or http://www.opportunities.auckland.ac.nz

* These ranks are roughly equivalent to Assistant through to tenured Associate Professor in the United States, and Lecturer through to Reader in Britain. The position is thus open to scientists at career stages ranging from PhD through to those with established research programmes and significant teaching experience.
