Post-Doctoral Position in Physical Oceanography - University of Southern Mississippi

The Department of Marine Science at the University of Southern Mississippi seeks applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position in numerical modeling of oceanic physical processes. The successful applicant to this position will participate in a project to study wind-driven currents and wind waves in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The investigation will be based on the coupled model of wind currents and waves recently developed by Mellor and Donelan. The interpretation of numerical experiments directed to studying the interaction of currents and waves in the region will be the central topic of the research.

The project at USM is part of the Northern Gulf-Coastal Hazard Collaboratory (NG-CHC, http://ngchc.org/), a multi-institutional program formed by Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The NG-CHC is developing a regional-scale integrated cyberinfrastructure for multidisciplinary research and education capable of simulating relevant interacting processes from the watershed to the coast to capture the dynamic nature of earth surface processes. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other members of the NG-CHC, both at USM and the other member institutions.

The USM numerical modeling project is directed by Professors V. M. Kamenkovich and D. A. Nechaev, and includes 1 part-time Master student. It is expected that candidates to the position have experience in running the Princeton Ocean Model or similar coastal ocean model. A Ph.D. in physical oceanography is required. Knowledge of ocean currents theory along with wind wave theory is desirable but not required. This is one-year position with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance. Review of applications will begin immediately. Please email a statement of research interests, CV and names of three references to vladimir.kamenkovich@usm.edu or to dmitri.nechaev@usm.edu.
