Postdoctoral position available at the Laboratoire de Physique des Oceans
Recent analyses of high resolution numerical simulations have revealed the richness and importance of submesoscale ocean dynamics. In fact, ocean turbulence at scales below 200 km (including part of the mesoscale and submesoscale activity) is at least as energetic as that associated with the largest mesoscale eddies. There are methodologies under development to infer, eg., from SSH, 3D mesoscale/submesoscale velocities near the surface but also several hundred meters below it. Such a methodology has been successfully applied to western regions of oceanic basins. The question addressed by this proposal concerns its applicability to eastern regions of oceanic basins. This should contribute not only to the knowledge, from space, of the 3D ocean dynamics, but also to the estimation of the vertical pump triggered by mesoscale eddies, which is a physical mechanism strongly relevant for the biological processes.
In collaboration with Patrice Klein, the members of the "high resolution ocean" team at the Laboratoire de Physique des Oceans and other partners of the RedHots project, the postdoctorate will be in charge of analyzing high resolution numerical solutions carried out at the Earth Simulator. He or she will be involved in the evaluation and refinements of reconstruction methods for the upper ocean turbulent velocities.
Applicants must have a PhD in physics and if possible an experience in numerical modeling, geophysical fluid dynamics or turbulence. The appointment is fulltime for two years.
