NSF-funded summer student projects in Zanzibar

#1 Unread post by jtheiss »

Dear all,

The US National Science Foundation has recently awarded a grant to allow a different group of three to four undergraduate and graduate students in the US to gain international research experience in coastal oceanography on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania, for two months each summer from 2009 to 2011. Two types of summer student projects are offered: 1) Further developing a coastal model of the Zanzibar Channel using ROMS and 2) Making measurements in the Zanzibar Channel using an ADCP and a CTD. The projects will be supervised by local scientists and Dr. Javier Zavala-Garay at Rutgers University, who will be with the students in Zanzibar. Since this is an educational program no prior knowledge of ROMS or experience with making measurements is required, but the students must have a strong interest in coastal oceanography.

I will soon have detailed information about these summer student projects on my web site, including information about the application procedure, and will announce it on this list. For now, I would be grateful if interested undergraduate and graduate students in the US could simply express their general interest in a brief email to me at j.theiss@theissresearch.org. Many thanks!
