grid file making

Hi all,
Is there any restriction that for suppose 1° resolution the depth below 300m is taken as 300m in making grid file in Roms_tools. If so how one can resolve the coastal processes?
What is the option other than increasing the resolution of the domain?
If that depth limitation is there...!! then one has to mask the data where depth is below 300m as land before running make_grid.m. I think that will be the right thing, instead of making all data below 300m. depth as 300m.
Not only that make_grid.m doesnot supporting any other bathymetry file other than etopo2.nc (provided by roms). It is showing some matlab error. Is something should be done for the bathymetry file before running make_grid.m?
All feedback and clarifications regarding this issue are welcome.
