"Best" is quite subjective.
I think that this depends on your background and what you consider basic, as well as whether you're looking for at text on application vs. mathematical framework.

have you tried compiling with lower optimization? i've experienced seemingly random blowups with some combinations of fortran&mpi using -O3 while -O2 ran just fine.
