Re: some of the standard output in netcdf

I agree, netcdf output for these variables would be nice! For the time being, here's a fix using awk and cdo: awk '/0:00 / { print $4 }' output.out > ekin.txt cdo -f nc input,r1x1 ekin.nc < ekin.txt For epot, replace "$4" with "$5", etc. Who knows, someone might find it useful.

Re: Imposing sea level time series at boundaries

Thank you, Kate! Then I just misread your answer. I thought when you said "it is tricky/impossible to simply impose zeta" you meant we shouldn't use it at all, but now I gather that simply imposing would mean the option Clamped, but we should use Chapman and Flather instead.

Re: Imposing sea level time series at boundaries

Does anybody have further suggestions on what kind of zeta/ubar/vbar boundary conditions to use in non-tidal applications?

Re: Imposing sea level time series at boundaries

So does that mean the Chapman/Flather condition only makes sense for tides? Why? And what would be better for non-tidal sea level and barotropic momentum?

Re: negative temperature

Since the most extreme negative temperatures are located at the coasts: Have you checked if maybe the land-sea-mask of the forcing does not exactly match the one of your ocean model? You can turn on surface net heat flux output to see if you lose the heat toward the atmosphere.

Re: Where does ROMS store SSTs?

Thank you for your responses! I actually made a mistake when estimating the depth of the uppermost rho-point, and it is not as far from the surface as I thought. Also, the temperature in the first couple of sigma-layers doesn't vary much, so I guess it's all right to just use the top layer's ...

Re: Zeta following the bathymetry and velocity profiles

Thanks for the response! I am running with reanalysis forcing. In runs without forcing, there is the same effect but smaller. I doubt that the bathymetry is the problem, since there have been other studies with a similar setup. Maybe this is just a meaningful effect simulated by the model that for ...

Where does ROMS store SSTs?

I would like to compare my modelling output to satellite-measured SST. Is it possible to have ROMS write out an SST variable? Or should I just take the uppermost layer of the variable "temp" (potential temperature)? On the one hand, that might be all right, since the temperature in the model cannot ...

Zeta following the bathymetry and velocity profiles

My ROMS application with one-way nesting into a global ocean model and realistic atmospheric forcing runs in a stable way, but the results are a bit unrealistic. In particular, the SSH (variable zeta) and the horizontal velocities closely follow the bathymetry (which I smoothed already to avoid such ...

Re: sponge layer for biharmonic viscosity

I finally solved the problem for my case by employing Chapman boundary conditions for zeta and Flather boundary conditions for ubar and vbar. This removes the inconsistencies in the continuity equation at the boundaries which seems to have been responsible for the high vertical velocities.

Saulo,

have you found a solution to your problem? I seem to have a similar one.

Re: it was: "Time for another European ROMS workshop?"

Sure, the goal would not be to replace the planned ROMS workshops or to move them over to Europe. But maybe we could just have an informal meeting of European users to discuss applications, problems, and some results. Just a couple of days at a European university or institute, more talks and ...

Re: it was: "Time for another European ROMS workshop?"

I think it's a great idea and I'd definitely want to participate. If nobody from America could make it to the workshop, it should work with Europeans only, too. Especially for European PhD students, it's always hard to justify a journey to a workshop in Brazil or Honolulu in front of their ...

Ascending/descending latitude dimension in forcing fields

Hi, a suggestion to the subroutine "hindices" that would probably be easy to write and extremely helpful in certain cases: There should be an error message for when the condition ((Ygrd(1,j ).le.Ypos(mp,np)).and.(Ygrd(1,j+1).gt.Ypos(mp,np))) (and vice versa for X) is never satisfied. More ...

Thank you, that sounds great! I just need something to start with, later I might replace pieces that turn out to be problematic. Re: How to use forcing package

I'm basically looking for something equivalent to the Roms-tools that come with the ROMS-Agrif distribution, but they are not really compatible with Rutgers ROMS. They let you pick a study region and time period and provide all grd/ini/frc/blk/clm/bry/... files that one needs for a simulation. I was ...
